No. 94 Dual Beam Scribe - OneTIME Tool

At the beginning of the 20th Century the term “Pre-Hung Door” didn’t exist. Neither did hand-held routers or routing templates. Hinges were mortised into doors and door frames with keen chisels and skilled hands. Seeing how much time finish carpenters spent laying out these mortises, Stanley Tools invented the Butt Gauge, a tool with two marking gauges and a square all in one compact, apron-friendly tool. Woodpeckers newest OneTIME Tool, the No. 94 Dual Beam Scribe, is a re-creation of the Stanley #94. The #94 was the second-generation of the Stanley Butt Gauge, patented more than one hundred years ago. Today few of us need to tackle hand-mortising passageway doors, but this clever tool comes in handy anytime you need to mark two different dimensions over and over again.

Historically, one marking gauge was set to the thickness of the hinge while the second was set to the width of the mortise. That procedure works just as well today laying out mortises for the hinges of a jewelry box or small cabinet.  But the dual settings could also represent the shoulder width and tenon length of mortise and tenon joints or the pin and tail lengths of through dovetails.

The precisely machined shoulders on both sides of the gauge make the tool a small square, too. With an overall length of 3" it is ideally suited for working on the edges of boards, where larger squares would be awkward.

Woodpeckers No. 94 Dual Beam Scribe is a fairly faithful reproduction of the early-20th century Stanley #94. It has all the same features and functions, but they build it the “Woodpeckers Way”. The body is precision machined on state-of-the-art CNC mills from aircraft grade aluminum. After machining, the bodies are anodized for surface protection and to give them the familiar “Woodpecker Red” color. The beams and locking knobs are turned from stainless steel. The marking cutters are hardened to take and hold an edge and micro-lapped for sharpness to deliver crisp, clean scribe lines. And the scales are laser engraved to the same tolerance Woodpeckers use for their Precision Woodworking Squares and Woodworking Rules.

Woodpeckers make the Dual Beam Scribe in both Inch and Metric graduations. Either version comes to you in an American-made protective case with a custom-cut foam liner. It will keep your tool protected while it’s waiting for the next project requiring razor sharp, accurate lay out lines.

Like all OneTIME Tools, the No. 94 Dual Beam Scribe is only made to order, precisely machined and carefully inspected in their Strongsville, Ohio factory (just south of Cleveland). Order deadline is Monday, December 16, 2019. Once orders are filled, these tools will be retired from the product line. Order yours today! Delivery is scheduled for April, 2020.
